Medical terminology can often seem complicated and hard to understand. This course has been created to provide a basic introduction for those working in health and social care, who may need to understand commonly used medical terms and abbreviations in everyday tasks.

The Origin of Medical Terminology and Language

Many medical terms have their origins in Greek, which played a key role in the history of medicine. Later, the Romans adopted these terms, and they became part of the English language through Latin. This has created a shared medical language recognised across the world. However, understanding medical terminology can be challenging, particularly as Greek and Latin are not commonly taught in the UK’s education system.

What Does This Health and Social Care Training Course Cover?

This medical terminology training course includes information relating to the breaking down of medical terms into the prefix, root and stem, the key root terms for body parts and organs, examples of commonly used prefixes and suffixes, commonly used abbreviations, Greek and Latin influences, and the differences between UK English and US English.
Our medical terminology course has been developed to help provide a basic understanding for those working in clinical and non-clinical roles in health and social care who may be required to understand certain commonly used medical terms and abbreviations in their day-to-day activities at work.
These roles could include (but are not limited to):
  • administration staff
  • receptionists.
Health and social care staff sometimes use the same abbreviations to mean different things. Queries should always be checked with a suitable clinician. It is important to be familiar with your organisation’s policies and procedures to ensure that the correct terminology is used.
