Why is Menopause Awareness Training Important?
For years there has been a steady increase in the employment rate of women who are over 50 years old in the UK.1 This means that many women are working through and beyond menopause. 67% of women with experience of menopause symptoms say they have had a mostly negative effect on them at work,1 and around 1 in 6 women have considered leaving work due to a lack of support in relation to their menopause symptoms.2
What Does this Menopause Support at Work Course Cover?
This Menopause Support at Work course will help learners to understand who is affected by menopause, how menopause symptoms may affect people in the workplace, and why it is important that everyone has menopause training. The course provides information on the stages and symptoms of menopause, premature ovarian insufficiency (POI) and early menopause, and how these may be brought on by medical treatments and surgical interventions. It also outlines how menopause is treated and managed and how individuals with menopause symptoms can seek help and support.
Learners will discover why it is important for employers to provide support to those going through menopause and the benefits this brings to workers and organisations. The course gives advice on practical support employers can provide, including creating an open and inclusive workplace culture, and guidance on having supportive conversations about menopause. The course also discusses how people’s experiences of menopause may be influenced by their culture, ethnicity, gender identity, and/or caring responsibilities.
What Are the Three Stages of Menopause?
Perimenopause is the time leading up to menopause. During this stage, individuals may begin to notice some changes, such as periods becoming heavier/lighter/irregular, hot flushes, changes in mood, and disturbed sleep. This is due to the fluctuation of hormones.
Perimenopause tends to begin in a woman’s early to mid 40s. However, it can happen later or earlier and can last for a few months or several years.
Menopause refers to when periods stop, and ovaries lose their reproductive function. This usually happens between the ages of 45 and 55 years.
For most women, menopause is deemed to have occurred after 12 consecutive months without a menstrual period, vaginal bleeding or spotting.
Postmenopause is the time after menopause. Periods stop, oestrogen levels are very low and, generally, women experience fewer symptoms. Some will continue to have hot flushes and other symptoms.
Who Is This Training Programme Suitable For?
This Menopause Support at Work eLearning course is for healthcare professionals in all different job roles. It is important that everyone is included in menopause training whether they will go through menopause themselves or not, as those who do not go through menopause may be involved in supporting those who do.
