Patient Deterioration and Escalation Tool

Blue Stream Academy is delighted to extend complimentary access to the Restore2mini eLearning module to all caregivers across the UK.

RESTORE2mini eLearning Course Collaboration

Developed in collaboration with experts from the South West Academic Health Science Network (South West AHSN) this module aims to equip care and nursing staff with the necessary skills to identify soft signs of patient deterioration and effectively communicate concerns using the SBARD communication tool.

RESTORE2mini Origin

Originally crafted in partnership with the NHS West Hampshire Clinical Commissioning Group, now a part of the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Integrated Care System, and the Wessex Academic Health Science Network, RESTORE2mini builds upon nationally recognised deterioration methodologies such as the national early warning score (NEWS2), early recognition (Soft Signs), and structured communications (SBARD).

What is RESTORE2mini?

RESTORE2mini is a physical deterioration and escalation tool designed for use by carers in non-acute settings, including residential, and by domiciliary and informal care providers.

What are the benefits of RESTORE2mini training?

  1. It helps you recognise when a person you are caring for may be deteriorating by noticing physical, mental and/or behavioural changes also known as soft signs.
  2. It supports you to consider the person’s care and Treatment Escalation Plans (TEPs). TEPs are covered within the RESTORE2mini course.
  3. It facilitates your conversation with the most appropriate health professional at the right time. It also aids in giving the most relevant information to support their professional decision making.
  4. Effectively using this tool will ensure the person you care for gets the right care, at the right time, in the right place.

What are soft signs of deterioration?

Soft signs are the early signs, flags or indicators of physical deterioration distinct from the hard signs that could be measured, such as heart rate, blood pressure or temperature. Soft signs can also include observed changes in the person’s normal behaviour, such as sleeping, eating and drinking.
NHS England Workforce, Training and Education have created a video on 3 soft signs of deterioration on their YouTube video.

What is the SBARD communication tool?

SBARD is an easy-to-use structured form of communication that enables information to be transferred accurately between individuals. It was originally used by the United States military for communication on submarines. It is now used throughout the health and social care system to facilitate and improve communication.
Health Education England (HEE) have created a video providing a brief overview of SBARD.

How do I access this free eLearning for Health and Social Care?

Whether providing care in a residential facility, from a domiciliary provider, or within their own homes, caregivers throughout the UK can benefit from this resource at no cost.
