Four New Hospice Volunteer Training Courses | Out Now

Following the positive response to our original hospice volunteer training course launch, Blue Stream Academy is pleased to announce the release of four new volunteer training courses.
Each course is:
- designed specifically for volunteer roles
- short and accessible (10–15 minutes)
- free from formal knowledge tests
- focused on key, practical information.
Fire Safety for Volunteers
Every year, services are interrupted, property and equipment damaged, injuries sustained, and lives lost as a result of fires in the workplace.
People caught in a fire are at risk of burns and smoke inhalation.
Fire safety training is essential as it helps to prevent injury or death from the fire and ensures everyone’s safety.
Learn key fire safety principles, including how fires start, the characteristics of fire, smoke and toxic fumes, and the actions required on discovering a fire or hearing an alarm, while promoting fire prevention.
Equality, Diversity and Inclusion for Volunteers
This course will describe what equality, equity, diversity and person-centred support mean, and what you can do to help create a more inclusive community at your organisation.
Promoting equality, equity and diversity is important because:
- it means that everyone is treated with respect and dignity
- people’s differences are recognised, respected, valued and celebrated
- each person has their specific needs taken into consideration and met
- everyone is made to feel respected, welcomed, valued and involved as part of a group.
This course highlights the importance of treating people with respect and dignity, recognising and valuing differences, and promoting inclusive values to ensure that individuals feel valued, respected, and included.
Slips, Trips and Falls for Volunteers
Slip, trip and fall accidents happen for many reasons and they can have a serious impact on people’s lives.
Slips and trips are the most common cause of major injuries at work and can happen almost anywhere.
Some people are more likely to fall than others.
In busy places with lots of people, flooring problems can quickly become dangerous.
So, it is important that everyone at the organisation is aware of the risks and helps deal with problems before they can cause serious issues.
This eLearning course supports volunteers to understand why slips, trips and falls happen, how to reduce the risks, and the importance of reporting accidents and near misses.
Mental Health Awareness for Volunteers
Mental health is like physical health: everyone has it and we need to look after it.
Mental health problems can affect how a person thinks, feels, functions, behaves or interacts with others on a daily basis.
Explore factors affecting mental wellbeing, recognise symptoms of mental health issues, and learn strategies to enhance wellbeing, support others, and seek help—fostering a supportive, informed approach to mental health.
Further Hospice Care Training
Alongside our few near hospice training courses, Blue Stream Academy also hosts 140+ hospice training courses, including nine further courses designed specially to provide training for hospice volunteers.
Each of our hospice training courses is Continuing Professional Development (CPD)-certified and is designed specifically for palliative and end of life care providers. Each course targets a specific range of skills and knowledge, including case studies and data throughout. Our hospice care training courses are split into role specific training, allowing organisations to create custom job roles to ensure essential training is provided to the right members of the team.
The Importance of High Quality Hospice Staff Training
Providing high quality training for hospice staff is crucial to making sure the care offered is truly compassionate and effective. Good training helps staff develop strong communication skills, which are essential when supporting patients and their families through difficult moments. It also ensures everyone follows proper health and safety practices, keeping both patients and caregivers protected. With the right preparation, staff can spend time more meaningfully with those in their care, helping them feel seen, supported, and valued. Quality training also gives caregivers a real sense of purpose in their work and helps hospices stay closely connected to the local community, offering care that genuinely reflects its needs and values.
