Dentistry CPD eLearning | Intraoral Scanning
Blue Stream Academy is pleased to announce that a new Intraoral Scanning dental CPD eLearning module is out now on the Dental eLearning and Management platform.
During this module, dental staff will understand the potential uses of an intraoral scanner, the pros and cons of intraoral scanners and the care and maintenance of the intraoral scanner equipment.
When the practice initially purchases a scanning unit, the company will often provide comprehensive training to all staff and also provide access to ongoing support platforms.
It is vital that all members of the clinical team that will be using the equipment are trained to do so and are comfortable before scanning patients.
What is an Intraoral Scanner?
Essentially, an intraoral scanner is a device used to capture direct optical images using beams of light projected onto surfaces within the mouth. When these images are taken in succession, they can produce a 3D digital impression of the mouth. Each intraoral scan taken consists of thousands of images, captured by the sensor. When these are processed in the computer software, they are merged to produce 3D images and models, showing an accurate representation of both teeth and gums and any surrounding dental anatomy.
Who Should Complete Intraoral Scanning Training?
This dental CPD eLearning module is suitable for clinical dental professionals, such as dentists, hygienists and practice nurses.
Which General Dental Council (GDC) Development Outcomes Does The Intraoral Scanning Module Cover?

For dentists, their CPD cycle runs from 1 January to 31 December each year. For all other dental care professionals, their CPD cycle runs from 1 August to 31 July each year. The overall GDC CPD cycle runs for 5 years for both dentists and dental professionals.
Over the 5-year period, dentists need to complete a minimum of 100 CPD hours (approx. 20 hours per year), dental hygienists, orthodontic therapists and clinical dental technicians need to complete 75 CPD hours (approx. 15 hours per year), whilst dental nurses and dental technicians need to complete 50 CPD hours (approx. 10 hours per year).
The GDC specifies that the total CPD hours should be spread throughout the five-year period, and a minimum of 10 hours of CPD need to be completed every-two consecutive years, including when one CPD comes to an end and a new one begins.
