Dental Tooth Whitening | Training Course for Dentists + Dental Professionals
Blue Stream Academy is pleased to announce that a new Tooth Whitening eLearning module is out now on the Dental eLearning and Management platform.
This dental tooth whitening course provides dental practitioners with information on tooth whitening, including:
- causes of tooth discolouration
- the reasons why people may wish to whiten their teeth
- the laws surrounding tooth whitening treatments, including which dental professionals may legally prescribe or carry out tooth whitening treatments
- how tooth whitening works and different methods of treatment (such as in surgery laser treatment and home application)
- the products that are used in tooth whitening
- the risks and potential side effects of treatments
- how to care for the teeth after a tooth whitening treatment to maintain the whiter appearance
- and the alternatives to tooth whitening.
Our tooth whitening training is aimed at any registered dental professionals within a dental practice who will be involved in prescribing or administering tooth whitening procedures. This module will be beneficial to learners as it provides up-to-date information on all aspects of tooth whitening, helping practitioners to ensure they are compliant with current legislation and to provide excellent service to their patients.
This module covers General Dental Council (GDC) Development Outcomes B and C. Upon completion, the learner will receive a dental CPD certificate with 0.25 CPD hours attached.
Who Can Provide Teeth Whitening?
Regardless of which tooth whitening products are used, only registered dental professionals can carry out tooth whitening treatments. This is to minimise the risk of harm to the public. If tooth whitening is to be carried out by a dental therapist, it must be clinically prescribed to the patient beforehand by a dentist. Dental nurses cannot carry out tooth whitening treatments. However, they can assist in the delivery of the treatment.
What Do Teeth Whitening Treatments Contain?
Whilst there are many over the counter and online products available which promise to whiten teeth, either Hydrogen Peroxide or Carbamide Peroxide must be present for effective and noticeable whitening to occur.
Where Can Tooth Whitening Treatments Be Provided?
While the mechanism of the whitening products remains the same, tooth whitening products can be applied in two ways.
In Surgery ‘Laser’
Tooth whitening gel is applied in surgery, while the patient waits. Occasionally, a light may be shone on the tooth surface, referred to as ‘laser’ whitening, which is thought to accelerate the process. This method is preferred by patients who feel they may not be able to establish a whitening routine at home and would like a more ‘instant’ result.
Home Teeth Whitening
Bespoke home whitening kits are created for the patient and following an initial application and demonstration of the tooth whitening gel in clinic, the patient can continue with the whitening process at home. This is usually carried out over a period of two to three weeks, or until the patient is happy with the shade and appearance of their teeth.
