Cytology - Cervical Screening | eLearning for Healthcare

Blue Stream Academy

Update to the Cytology eLearning course, now called Cervical Screening

Our ‘Cytology’ module has now been updated and renamed as ‘Cervical Screening’. These updates were essential to ensure that our training is in line with the recent updates to the NHS Cervical Screening Programme. The NHS Cervical Screening Programme is used to check whether women have any abnormal cervical cell changes that could develop into cervical cancer, by testing a sample of cells (cytology) that are taken from the cervix. In recent years, controlled trials have considered the use of hrHPV (high risk human papillomavirus) testing as a primary screening test. Compared with cytology, HPV testing has been shown to reduce the risk of developing cervical cancer through increased sensitivity for underlying disease. In 2016 it was announced that HPV primary screening will be implemented into the NHS Cervical Screening Programme, with full geographical coverage achieved across the whole of England by 2020. As the information within this module has significantly changed, we recommend that users retake this training to ensure they are up to date with the new guidelines.
